Lakeside Group of Rockwall - Group History

The founding members of the group were Jack M. and Connie M. They wanted to start a non-smoking
group on the east side of the Interstate I-30 bridge spanning Lake Ray Hubbard (The Big Book Group of
Rockwall had been around for decades, but at that time was a smoking group.) Jack and Connie secured
a meeting space at the Lakepointe Church in Rockwall, TX. This first meeting took place on August 5,
2011. About 8-10 people interested in calling this group their home group, met. They discussed the
group name, meeting format, frequency of meetings and where in the church the meeting would be
held. The group was registered with the General Service Office, as the Lakeside Group. It was decided
that meetings would be in the portable buildings located in the parking lot on the east side of the
church. The group started with a noon meeting 5 days a week. The group has experienced fantastic
growth since this first meeting. Meetings at 7:00 am and evening meetings were added as the group
grew. Currently, there are approximately 70 AA members that call the Lakeside Group their home
group.
In July 2018, the group moved into a room inside the church. At that time, 7 am and noon meetings
M-F, 6:30 pm meetings T-F, a women’s meeting on Monday at 6 pm and a men’s meeting on Saturday at
9 am were being held.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, all meetings were moved to an online meeting format between March
2020 and April 2021. Many newcomers were welcomed into the group during these online meetings.
Group members delivered ‘desire chips’ and Big Books to these new AA members; either by mail or by
leaving them in their mailbox or at their front door.
When the church reopened in April 2021, we were only allowed to hold 2 meetings at noon per week.
The Lakeside Group members wanted to get back to our full schedule of meetings. In June 2021, a new
location was found at 811 E. Yellow Jacket Rd., Rockwall, TX 75087. As the group recovered from the
impact of the pandemic, in person attendance grew quickly. Within a month, we moved to our current
suite, 103, on the east side of the building, so we would have a bigger space. We continued some online
meetings but slowly transitioned back to having only in person meetings.
Currently, the group holds meetings M-F at 7:00 AM and Noon, Wednesdays at 6:30 PM and Sundays
at noon. We also hold 2 women’s meetings, Mondays at 6:00 PM and Saturdays at 10:30 AM, and a
men’s meeting on Saturdays at 9:00 AM.
The group tries to uphold the Traditions as it carries AA’s message to the next suffering alcoholic. The
group members stress to newcomers the importance of doing the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous,
getting a sponsor, joining a homegroup, attending meetings, reading conference approved literature and
joining in fellowship. Some group members bring meetings to the Rockwall jail. Members’ sobriety
birthdays for over one year of continuous sobriety are celebrated on the last Sunday of the month. A
potluck dinner to enjoy in fellowship takes place at 5:00 pm and the meeting starts at 5:30 pm. We hold
our group conscience meeting on the first Thursday of the month online. The group is involved with the
Alcoholics Anonymous Service Structure of the U.S and Canada by having an active GSR that attends
district meetings and area assemblies to represent the group.
The Lakeside Group will continue being of service to newcomers, AA members and AA as a whole.
The group looks forward to the future and what it may hold. Please visit our website, lakesideaa.org.
